Pertronix Unit in Hillman Hunter > anyone done this?

Postby Bryce » Wed Jun 14, 2006 11:30 am

I am after a little advice on installing the Pertronix electrical ignition unit in place of the points and condensor in a Hillman Hunter. I am thinking of purchasing a unit for my daily driver to test, and eventually move the unit into my rebuilding project.

Has anoyone on the board done this before? Would like to get a picture emailed through to the board if we can?

Unit I am thinking of can be seen here : http://pertronix.carshopinc.com/product ... 99/LU-142A

Also any feedback on how it runs, installation time (and pain?). Much appreciated.

Hi Bryce. Is that Us or Aus? Nissan Bluebird 84 series 2 dizzy with a small bit of machining does the trick as well.
Cheers

That would be US i think, for the Pertronix pricing.

I have heard mention of the Nissan Bluebird 84 Series 2 Dizzy conversion before. I might be able to get someone to machine the end of one if I can get some pics or even measurements for the conversion.

So if you have your dizzy out at any stage, any chance you could take a picture of the machined part please Dazz?

Or any tips or comments on doing the conversion? Thanks

Hi Bryce. I am gretting one dropped off at my house within the next two weeks(when John Mcrae returns from holidays) so i can have one machined for myself. I can get some pics done and post them. $70 US is not bad though, does that fit straight in?
I guess its worthwhile to machine a bluey if you get it cheap, some wreckers want $100 for them which makes it a little spendy once you have paid for some machining. If they fit straight into a Hunter i may concider getting one too.

Bryce, For what it's worth........there was one already installed in my "59 Husky when I bought it. I could never get the engine to idle properly :( , so just to say I checked it as a posible problem, I replaced it with and old set of points and condensor I had laying about, and it runs much better now :D . So I would have to say I would not take one even if it was offered for free. A lot of folks with different Rootes cars like them but I'm not one them.

Ahh interesting Russ, thanks for the feedback. Hearing a lot of mixed reports about them. Will wait and see how Dazza goes with the Bluebird dizzy conversion, and see if I can get that done easily in Brisbane.

There's another option. Rootes Post Vintage spares are offereing brand new dissies which are identical - in 2 types. One has the usual points and condensor set up and the other is fully electronic - no contact points to wear/radjust/replace. They aren't cheap but they are Brand New and they just bolt straight in - no machining and messing about. Here's the website, they also have some other interesting stuff http://www.rootesparts.com/

Also, Bryce, several people (including Jan Eyerman) on the Yahoo Hillman list have done the Pertronix thing and would be happy to provide advice.

Cheers, Vic

I've used them on the Hillman Imps I drive. (25d4 dizzy). I love them.
But, you need to make sure there is a ballast resistor inline or the coil has at least 4 ohms resistance or your have issues. This is probably why Russ had issues.
I noticed cold running issues dissappeared with the pertonix installed. (well, some of them).

I'd take any free ones that Russ passes on!

Vic, thanks for the tip on the dizzies with electronic parts installed, its a possible option, except a little bit $$ for me at the moment

had one on a dodge dart with the 318; never really noticed any difference. I also never had a problem with points on my Avenger for that matter.
